Ishiwata Koitsu

Ishiwata Koitsu (石渡光逸, active 1930s) was a Japanese woodblock print artist who produced landscape prints during the shin-hanga era. Ishiwata is sometimes confused with the more famous Tsuchiya Koitsu, as both artists used the art name "Koitsu" — written with the same characters (光逸) — though they were different individuals with different family names (Ishiwata versus Tsuchiya).

Ishiwata Koitsu's landscape prints depict Japanese scenic views in the atmospheric style characteristic of the shin-hanga movement, with attention to the effects of weather, light, and season on the depicted landscapes. His work follows the conventions established by the leading shin-hanga landscape artists, employing graduated color printing and careful tonal control to create mood and atmosphere.

Limited biographical documentation has survived about Ishiwata, and the confusion with Tsuchiya Koitsu has sometimes complicated the attribution and study of his work. Collectors and dealers should be careful to distinguish between the two artists based on seal marks, publisher information, and stylistic analysis.
