Takeo Terasaki

Takeo Terasaki (寺崎武男, 1883–1967) was a Japanese artist and printmaker who was among the earliest practitioners of the sosaku-hanga (creative prints) movement. Born in 1883, Terasaki was a contemporary of Kanae Yamamoto and Kogan Tobari, and like them he embraced the revolutionary principle that printmakers should design, carve, and print their own works rather than working within the traditional collaborative system. He participated in early sosaku-hanga exhibitions and contributed to the nascent movement's development during its formative years in the 1910s and 1920s.

Terasaki studied Western-style painting and developed an interest in European printmaking traditions, which reinforced his commitment to the sosaku-hanga ideal of artistic self-sufficiency. His prints, though modest in number and scale, reflected the movement's emphasis on personal expression and the artist's direct engagement with the printmaking medium. He worked in a style influenced by European Post-Impressionism, with simplified forms and muted color harmonies.

While never achieving the prominence of the movement's leading figures, Terasaki's participation in the founding generation of sosaku-hanga artists contributed to the movement's early momentum. He continued to practice and exhibit through the middle decades of the twentieth century, witnessing the growth of the movement he had helped to establish. He died in 1967 at the age of eighty-four.
