Nishiyama Hideo

Nishiyama Hideo (西山英雄, 1911–1989) was a Japanese artist who worked in both nihonga painting and woodblock printmaking, producing landscape and figure subjects that reflect the aesthetics of the shin-hanga tradition. Born in 1911, Nishiyama trained in the nihonga tradition and applied his painterly skills to woodblock print design.

His prints include landscape views and figure subjects rendered with the careful attention to atmosphere and detail characteristic of shin-hanga. Nishiyama's dual practice in painting and printmaking gave his work a painterly quality that distinguishes it from the more purely graphic approach of some shin-hanga contemporaries. His landscape prints show sensitivity to light and seasonal mood, while his figure subjects demonstrate the refined draftsmanship of his nihonga training.

Nishiyama's output as a print designer was modest compared to his painting career, and his prints are not widely documented in the standard shin-hanga reference literature. He died in 1989. His prints are encountered occasionally through Japanese art dealers and at auction, of interest to collectors who appreciate the intersection of nihonga painting and shin-hanga printmaking.
