Katsuyuki Nishijima

Katsuyuki Nishijima (西島勝之, born 1945) is a Japanese woodblock print artist known for his detailed and atmospheric depictions of traditional Japanese architecture, streetscapes, and seasonal views, with particular emphasis on the historic districts of Kyoto and the rural towns and villages of central Japan. His prints are notable for their precise architectural rendering, subtle color harmonies, and the gentle nostalgia they evoke for a Japan of wooden buildings, narrow lanes, and quiet seasonal rhythms that is rapidly disappearing.

Born in 1945, Nishijima grew up in a Japan that was transforming rapidly from a largely traditional society into a modern industrial nation. This experience of living through the disappearance of familiar streetscapes and architectural traditions appears to have shaped his artistic vision profoundly. His prints serve as both aesthetic celebrations and documentary records of traditional Japanese built environments, capturing with loving precision the character of machiya townhouses, thatched-roof farmhouses, stone-paved streets, wooden bridges, and the shops and workshops of traditional craft districts.

Nishijima works in the mokuhanga tradition, using multiple carved woodblocks to build up richly layered compositions in water-based pigments on washi paper.
