Biography

Cyrus Leroy Baldridge (1889–1977) was an American artist, illustrator, and author best known for his wartime sketches and book illustrations, who also produced a small number of woodblock prints during his time in Japan. Born on May 27, 1889, in Camp Hamilton, New York, Baldridge studied at the Frank Holme School of Illustration in Chicago before embarking on a career that combined art with journalism and travel.

Baldridge served as an artist-correspondent during World War I, producing vivid sketches of life at the front that were published in newspapers and later collected in the book "I Was There" (1919). This experience established his reputation as a documentary artist capable of capturing scenes of human experience with economy and immediacy. After the war, he traveled extensively through Africa and Asia, producing illustrations for books and magazines that documented the people and landscapes he encountered.

During a sojourn in Japan, Baldridge became interested in woodblock printing and produced a limited number of prints that reflect his exposure to the shin-hanga aesthetic. These works, depicting Japanese landscapes and scenes, demonstrate his facility as a draftsman and his ability to adapt to the woodblock medium, though printmaking remained a secondary pursuit alongside his primary work as an illustrator and author. He illustrated numerous books throughout his career, including works by his wife, the author and activist Caroline Singer. Baldridge died on November 18, 1977, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
